Magic Extend Van Gundy, GM Smith
According to a source familiar with the negotiations, the Magic have agreed to coach Stan Van Gundy and GM Otis Smith. The deals have not formally been announced.
The source says that the team picked up options that extend Van Gundy through the 2010-11 season, and Smith will be extended through 2011-12. The Orlando Sentinel reported the extensions first on Monday.
The Magic made only their second NBA finals in franchise history last year under Van Gundy and Smith. Smith made a courageous roster move mid-season after All-Star PG Jameer Nelson went down – he traded Houston for Rafer Alston, which propelled them through the playoffs to the NBA finals. Smith also helped trade for SG Vince Carter in the offseason, replacing the hole left by Hedo Turkoglu’s free agency departure.
Van Gundy has led the Magic to consecutive division titles since taking over before the 2007-2008 season. He replaced Billy Donovan, the coach of the Florida Gators who got cold feet before ever coaching an NBA game, and has compiled a 111-53 record since becoming coach of the Magic.
